Shanghai 48 Hour Film Project announces 2017 Awards

The 2017 Shanghai 48 Hour Film Festival came to Shanghai for the
7th consecutive year on Friday 3 November 2017

This was the for the kickoff of the shooting weekend beginning at 19:00 with a meetup at Shanghai’s Cambio Coffee of more than 20 teams of more than 200 film makers that embarked on this wild weekend of film making.

The task is to write, shoot and post produce a professional-quality film in just 2 days. And the result was 20 teams getting their 4-7 minute film delivered to Cambio Coffee by no later than 18:59:59 on Sunday November 5. There were two or three teams that wandered in before 18:00 on Sunday but by 18:45 the venue was crowded with frantic energy as teams rushed to deliver their masterpieces. Some teams had brought a laptop computer still churning out the final product from their editing programs.

The result was that by the next weekend these films were ready for the big screen November 12 at Central Studios.

Thanks to Central Studios Shanghai we were able to have a venue that held the more than 300 people that came out to watch the masterpieces of these weekend warriors in a two-hour compilation. Even with a packed house in the screening, the event would not have been financially viable but with thanks to China Indie Film for providing the organizing staff and pr and marketing for the event and Central Studios for donating the venue fees to the charity The Libarary Project we were able to raise nearly 6000 RMB for the funding of a rural library.

Following the screening, the jury members, screenwriter Michael Thede, production designer and film school faculty Dena Skalin and film director Luke Luoh deliberated on judging the awards. It was a hard decision as the quality of the submissions this year were all of a high quality and the merits of each film were many. There was also an audience award. The best film from the Shanghai contest will go to the international competition where it will be screened and compete with the best film from over 130 international cities at the Filmapalooza event which will be held this time in Paris, France in 2018.

The Awards event was held through special arrangement with the European Union Film Festival and sponsors Crystal Globe and Dragon Deity Capital at Shanghai’s Kartel wine bar with complimentary food and drinks. More than 150 people came to this event including several film makers and actors from EUFF films, members of the EUFF and the Shanghai 48HFP teams.

Congratulations to all of the participants and their great efforts!
